Gasping glochid

Slice me open like a saguaro fruit

Let me bleed, raw red with delight and comfort

Take your carob thumbs and rub the skin soaked

My needles fall out easily for you

Unlike the others, I’ve made sure to stab in all the right places

So they can let me be, to bask in the sun

I was not ripe until

You knew the clouds would be here soon

I was not ripe until

You knew the rain would wash away my spirit

I was not ripe until

You saw the brightness in my stamen

Thank you for letting me bask as long as I wanted

Then you can enjoy the crimson of my fruit

Some pictures of my “Girls weekend getaway” in Puerto Peñasco or what Americans call, Rocky Point. I think it’s ironic that I’ve lived in Arizona my whole life and have traveled to so many countries but it took me 30 years to finally go to Mexico (which is only 2 and a half hrs by car). It was a fun road trip through the Sonoran desert with the girls and we stopped at the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument before crossing the border. New experiences and new appreciation of the desert indeed. After our weekend in Puerto Peñasco, we stopped in Ajo, Arizona. I noticed an alley filled with street art and knew we had to turn around, after a burrito stop, of course. I’m originally from Northern Arizona but the longer I have been living in Phoenix (Southern Arizona) I am finally appreciating the Sonoran desert and being surrounded by all the beautiful Indigenous plants (cactus, ocotillio, Aloe Vera, Yucca, etc.). I have never been to this part of Southern Arizona, at times it was new and exciting but yet familiar and homely.
