rayraywaterpicpoem

The silent, subtleties of

Natives with neural activity

around these relatives

Boom to the ears of the corn

blast to the beans temples

and cuddle the cotyledons

Seeds with technology and instinct

KNOW

Then they swoon into the soil

Caress and cradle

roots spread

And stir

With dirt in between

Swollen bulbs

Feeling the weight of a

Tender energy

Guide down and deep

For they know it’s time

To germinate

And validate

What they were born for

To gift

To nourish

And to continue a cycle

Of some kind

Perspiring preparation

Laughing anticipation

leads to a new season

of hope

The water is ready

and

The sun has not come

Soon enough

Two Dinè Men At 8PM

Tonight, I descend my voice

Tonight, I bend my thoughts

Tonight, my heart was so heavy

It should’ve took

two tanks of gas

to get home

Instead, I was numb

as the tar

on the road

and dull as the red

unblinking tail lights

All headed south

In lines

And in curves

I,

Trying to dismantle

a young memory

where comfort

was never an option

I,

continue to drive

through mountains

and desert land

With my tired mother

sleeping in the

passenger seat

toward a night sky

that holds rain

and thunder

Yet,

I felt no thunder

and I saw no rain

to wash away

guilt that renders

sullen reaction

to drunken apologies

and protective pleas to stay

A brother and father

Two Dinè men

At 8pm

One to flee from

and one to run to

Tonight, I leave

So, I do not

say goodbye

What is a body?

Red Girl, Glittering World

What does it mean to inhabit this skin?

To the blue eyed beast

I am sin

To the “other”

MY other, red folx

I am the female rain in the desert

I am the gentle hummingbird levitating

I am the squash blossom blooming

I am the love of two Diné people

That met in phoenix

Returned north

And settled with a daughter and son

I am a red girl

Of the red house clan

Weeping from all the reaping

Of controlled colored bodies

Weeping for the raped bodies

Of our mothers, sisters, aunts, brothers, dads, uncles…

Weeping for the murdered bodies

Of our mothers, sisters, aunts, brothers, dads, uncles…

Weeping for the violence of all the colored bodies

Shipped from the coasts

of Africa to the so called

“new world”

That have perished in the slave castles

That have hid from Custer

Dwindled from dehydration

in the Sonoran desert

That have walked hundreds of miles

to Fort Sumner

And the thousands of Indigenous women

Still missing on Turtle Island

Fear from a body,

Where violence is the easiest agenda

To profit and control

“But that’s in the past”

They say

Policies, laws, limits

All fancy words for rules

For control

For entities to profit

In 100 years, we will read

About racist policies, laws,

a broken justice system

And say

“But that was in the past”

However, there will always be

New forms of controlled bodies

For profit

If we keep turning a blind eye

Apolitical for what?

To buy shit we don’t need

To drive to a job we hate everyday

To be disconnected from the land

To be separated from our loved ones

To be passive

To be reactive would be radioactive

But what do I know?

I’m just a red girl

Truth seeking

In this glittering world

Some pictures of my “Girls weekend getaway” in Puerto Peñasco or what Americans call, Rocky Point. I think it’s ironic that I’ve lived in Arizona my whole life and have traveled to so many countries but it took me 30 years to finally go to Mexico (which is only 2 and a half hrs by car). It was a fun road trip through the Sonoran desert with the girls and we stopped at the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument before crossing the border. New experiences and new appreciation of the desert indeed. After our weekend in Puerto Peñasco, we stopped in Ajo, Arizona. I noticed an alley filled with street art and knew we had to turn around, after a burrito stop, of course. I’m originally from Northern Arizona but the longer I have been living in Phoenix (Southern Arizona) I am finally appreciating the Sonoran desert and being surrounded by all the beautiful Indigenous plants (cactus, ocotillio, Aloe Vera, Yucca, etc.). I have never been to this part of Southern Arizona, at times it was new and exciting but yet familiar and homely.

Me and my tea

glowingteapic.png

How tea makes me feel, glowy and tough

It’s just me and my tea

Extra company, not misery

Formulates an herbal blend

Most times it will extend

And pause a quiet moment

Present, once again

I remember where I am

Chai

Oh, hi

Jasmine

My friend

Darjeeling

Makes me sing

Chamomile

Stay awhile

Navajo Tea

Wowee!

Your nature compels

And expels

Toxicities

With your herbal remedies

A kaleidoscope mist

Hovers my cup

Sweet, aromatic, flowers

Splashes of fruit

Encapsulates my taste buds

Then course through my blood

It’s just me

 and my tea

Enjoying each other’s company
